Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

Rating - ⭐⭐⭐1/2

"Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship--the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be."

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz is the first installment of the YA contemporary series Aristotle and Dante.

I said it before and I will say it again, contemporary books really aren't for me. I just find that when a book centres only around the lives of 'everyday' people it isn't very interesting to me. This is because I gravitate more towards fantasy and sci-fi. If I want to read a book grounded completely in reality (for the most part), I will pick up a mystery or horror book.

That being said, this wasn't a bad book and I can see why a lot of people have stronger feelings for it. It does cover important topics such as identity and sexuality. I will say though that there was a scene in the book that made me kind of uncomfortable because it came off as very pushy.

If you like coming of age stories that deals with topics of identity and sexuality, then give this a shot as you may end up appreciating this more than me.
