With the release of Curse of Shadows, I wanted to reread the first book before delving into it (albeit a bit late). Rereads seem to not work very well for me, but I am rather pleased that this ended up still being a really solid read.
My previous review was rather short, but the one comment I made still struck true. The characters in this really aren't the brightest crayons in the box. They all end up doing the opposite of what they were warned not to do, to disastrous results. Ash also failed to piece together a lot of hints that were painfully obvious to the reader. I also still didn't like the whole dynamic of Marcus being jealous that Ash found Kaylin. This story (or any story really) didn't need an unrequited best friend subplot.
I also didn't think the story needed anyone's perspectives aside from Ash and maybe Marcus, so Kaylin and Salila's occasional perspectives weren't needed (unless the author utilized them better to give more context and supporting narrative).
Again, though, despite the few negatives, this was still a solid read and one with a rather interesting magic system.
