"Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.
To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination."
Horrorstör is a standalone horror novel by Grady Hendrix.
I don't know if it was intentional or not, but this was very stereotypically horror. I can very easily list off the tropes common in horror movies that were used in this:
- Splitting up
- Ghost hunting
- Shouting and giving away your location
- Conducting a seance
- The one character who doesn't believe what's happening and walks right into danger
- The place formerly being something bad
- The open ending
Yeah...there were a lot of tropes in this. That aside, this was made worse because of Amy, who wasn't the greatest character to be following. She was just someone so caught up with her own lack of life that she would clap back at people because they had their own lives. Because her characterization was leaning more on the chaotic side, I thought it would have been more interesting if the ending leaned more into that.
The one thing I did like was the shift in furniture adds to ones of modern torture devices. It was a neat little touch.
