Jujutsu Kaisen: Vs. Mahito Arc | Review

Updated: May 4, 2022

Rating - ⭐⭐⭐1/2

"Yuji is assigned with the grade 1 sorcerer and former salaryman, Nanami Kento, to work on a hard mission. A strange curse named Mahito would bring him unexpected pain."

The Vs. Mahito Arc is the forth arc in the shonen manga series Jujustsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami. This arc consists of chapters 19-31 of the manga and episodes 9-13 of the anime.

In all honesty, this is my least favourite arc that I have read so far. It is not that the quality slipped, it is just because it was a bit hard to get through what occurred in this.

I am first going to go into detail without spoilers, but there will be a spoiler section containing my thoughts and reactions at the end. If you do not want to be spoiled, you can stop reading when prompted.

Let's get into the details.

As you might guess by the title of the arc, this arc focuses on the beginning of a conflict involving one of the primary antagonists of the series, Mahito. Stuck in the middle of this conflict is Itadori along with two new characters we are introduced to - Nanami Kento and Junpei.

While I said before in past reviews that we already got hints of the tone of the series, this I find is where it really starts to sink in because of what occurs. That is also why I said it is my least favourite arc so far because it was a sensitive subject they were covering.

I also don't think Junpei's character arc was handled as well as it could have been. His introduction is rather abrupt, as, unlike other characters who are naturally introduced, he just showed up out of nowhere. There were also some aspects that didn't make much sense as I don't get how Junpei was able to use his cursed technique so quickly.

Aside from that not, much else happened in this which also lent a hand to my rating. All we get otherwise really is getting to know Nanami, who is a great character by the way, and Itadori starting to grasp his capabilities.

One positive comment that I have, that I forgot to mention in my previous reviews, is that I like the idea that curses are the culmination of cursed energy leaked out of people as the result of negative emotions.

Now, I am going to go into spoilers, so if you don't want to be spoiled, you can stop reading here.

Junpei was done so dirty in this.

  • You introduce this new character, and even have him in the anime intro, and you think 'oh hey, this guy must be important'

  • But no, he doesn't survive the arc, and kind of dies in a really shitty way if you excuse my language

Look, I know that Mahito is a bad guy, but there is something about him that I really like for some reason.

  • He is pretty and childish but in a psychotic way and it works

  • He also kind of reminds me of Juuzou from Tokyo Ghoul

I love how when Mahito tried to transform Itadori, Sukuna was like 'yeah, I don't think so bud, try again and you're dead'

Mahito's domain expansion was a lot more impactful in the anime because the animation of him opening his mouth creeped me out.

We better get an explanation as to why Fushiguro is the only person Sukuna is interested in.

Now I know I said I liked Mahito but, when you think about it, he is probably the most brutal character so far.

  • While most would enjoy a good fight and kill their opponent without too much fanfare, Mahito enjoys the cat and mouse game a bit too much

  • His cursed technique is also inherently worse because it distorts humans and is essentially torture
