Spotify Book Tag

Updated: Dec 4, 2021

We're back with another 🤗Tag Time🤗. Yes I just did one but I am in a good mood so I'm going to do another one.

Doing a tag like this is not easy, especially when I mainly listen to Korean and Japanese songs. That just adds a whole new layer of difficulty. But, in order to celebrate BTS' new English single Butter, I am going to give this a try anyway. If you haven't check out Butter yet, I highly recommend it, it's really catchy.

I found this on Bookishly Rebecca but the tag was originally made by The Book Refuge, so all credits go to her.

The aim of this tag is to look at your most recent Spotify wrapped playlist, and pick out books that fit the top 5 songs in that playlist. Again, a little bit more difficult considering the music I listen to... My wrapped playlist was not what I was expecting it to be either.

I hope you get some good recommendations, whether they be books or music. Here we go!

  1. 飛行艇 (Hikoutei) by King Gnu

Starting out strong with a Japanese song, this is a song about hope in the face of a bleak future. A lot of books can fit that message...a lot. Even though I haven't read the series, I would say that The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb would fit this as I have heard that Fitz really goes through it. Seeing as I haven't read it yet I can't recommend it...

Instead I am going to say The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Locke does not have it easy in this book so it is safe to say that it is a bleak book.

2. Jopping by Super M

Our first Kpop song has arrived. It is a bit hard to think of recommendations for most Kpop songs because in reality, they are not that deep. From what I can tell from the lyrics, this is simply just a song about killing it while dancing. As I said, it's not that deep which makes it really hard to find a book that matches.

I haven't read any books that include dancing, so instead I am going to recommend a book about killing it, literally. I'm talking about book with a high body count that I have read, so series like A Song of Ice and Fire are ruled out. If you want a series that isn't afraid of killing off a large amount of characters, try out Attack on Titan or Berserk instead. These manga are both brutal and bloody.

3. Kick It by NCT 127

If you are looking for a song to hype you up, this is 100% one of those. I even know the choreography for the course, so needless to say I listened to this song a lot. Kick It is heavily inspired by martial arts and Bruce Lee. This was probably the easiest song to find a book to match, and that book would be Jade City by Fonda Lee.

Jade City is the first book in the Green Bone Saga, and it is pitched as the Godfather meets kungfu. If you watch the music video, you can see why this book fits with the themes.

4. Wow. by Post Malone

Wow indeed because I was not expecting an English song let alone Post Malone to show up in this playby Koyoharu Gotouge. Right from the start you are slapped in the face with the brutal reality of the world this is set in, and it only gets worse from there (but in the best way). made me go 'Wow'. s

The most recent series I read that blew me away and had me on the edge of my seat, was Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotouge. Right from the start you are slapped in the face with the brutal reality of the world this is set in, and it only gets worse from there (but in the bet way).

5. Wannabe by Itzy

Famous for the 'shoulder dance', Wannabe rounds out my top 5 most played songs of 2020. As can be seen with the lyrics for the course, this is a song about self-love, and being nobody else but yourself.

This one is a bit hard because I haven't really read any books about self-love. I think maybe the closest would be the Heartstopper series by Alice Oseman. I think Oseman is someone who knocks it out of the park when it comes to sexuality and acceptance in her books.
