"Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandant finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, grows into something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.
Except the discovery of their bond would mean death for each of them. There's still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win that war."
This is How You Lose the Time War is a standalone sci-fi novel by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone.
Here's the thing, I went into this book without fully committing to it because, despite the fact that I did read this, I didn't want to actually read it. This was not on my TBR and I only picked it up in order to fulfill a reading challenge prompt and this was the shortest book that fit.
Due to my reluctance to read it, I probably sabotaged my experience of this and would describe it with two words, 'bored and confused.' I can see why people would like this, but I knew this wasn't a book for me so my expectations were well met.
On the bright side, I didn't hate this but maybe the experience would have been more memorable if I did, rather than one that I am most likely to forget.
