"Spirals... this town is contaminated with spirals...
Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral — the hypnotic secret shape of the world. This bizarre masterpiece of horror manga is now available in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!"
Uzumaki is a completed horror manga by the master of the genre, Junji Ito.
Manga by Junji Ito is equal parts strange and creepy. It sure is an interesting experience to read one of his works. After you finish reading this, you will probably never look at a spiral the same way again.
While the uncanniness is very prominent in this, and for the most part you will be thoroughly creeped out by the body horror, I found my interest waning after the first volume. After you get a bit used to the story and the art style, I became less creeped out and more annoyed by the fact that not once did the main characters think it was a good idea to move out of town the second strange things started happening. I would have been out of there so quickly.
Nonetheless, if you like books with body horror elements or books that are just straight up strange, try this one out. If you have never read a manga before and like horror, maybe this is a good place to start at. Always remember though that manga is read back to front and right to left!
